Artist Statement
Deerhawk Art Studio began with paintings of my two primary totems: deer and hawk. Living in the countryside outside of Charlottesville, Virginia, I encountered new animal friends every single day, and one by one, they found their way into my art.
My work has grown to encompass the deepest connections we can foster with the natural world, and makes visible the unseen frequencies that surround us. Mandalas are a core feature of my work: golden or silver, the mandala is a precise and holy structure that reflects the structure of the cosmos. Our energy systems, and those of the creatures and natural elements around us, are in constant vibration with each other. I seek to capture that dance on the visible spectrum, and remind the viewer of our place, as Mary Oliver says, “in the family of things.”
