The Crane Wives: Isophene

Henrietta and Isophene were so close that folks forgot they weren’t sisters. When Henrietta got married at 18, all the fellas were broken-hearted to lose their chance with the belle of the county. But the marriage didn’t last long: Reginald went off on a work trip to New York City just 18 months after their big day and was never heard from again. When Isophene married her beau a year later, she insisted he move in with her, next-door to Henrietta, even though his family property was much larger and - so everyone whispered - less gloomy.

Isophene and Richard were together 25 years but were rarely seen in the same room. They just had different interests, they’d both say. But Henrietta and Isophene were always side-by-side, and eventually became roommates after Richard died from a sudden heart attack in middle age. They shared their gardens, their books, and their lives until they both died on the same day: Henrietta peacefully in her sleep one morning, and Isophene by stroke after her customary glass of sherry that evening. May we all be so lucky to find a bond such as theirs.
